FIRE DEPT FAQs
How do I arrange a visit/tour of the fire station?
Call the station at 608-647-4556 and leave a message, or use the contact us form with your request.
May I receive permission to have a fire outside?
Burning permits are required by the Wisconsin DNR in many parts of the state. Please refer to the Wisconsin DNR website for more information about restrictions and permits. If burning, please also contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Office at 608-647-2106 to advise them of a controlled burn.
What do I do when my smoke detector chirps?
The battery is probably low and needs to be changed. The detector may also be worn out or faulty and in need of replacement. Batteries should be replaced annually and the detectors should be replaced every ten years.
What are some things I should stress to my kids regarding fire prevention?
The National Fire Protection Association recommends a three pronged approach to ensuring that all children and adults are able to safely escape a home fire; planning an escape, maintaining smoke alarms, and practicing over-all preparation. Parents should draw floor plans illustrating all of their home’s escape routes to their children and establish a family meeting place in front of the home. Each floor and bedroom should have a working smoke detector. Parents can practice emergency preparation by keeping all exits and stairways free of clutter, teaching their children how to unlock all windows and doors, and ensuring that all family members know to call 911 in the event of a home fire. Emergency preparation will help families successfully use their planned escape in the event a smoke detector alerts a family to a fire. For more information, visit www.nfpa.org/factsheets.
How do I receive a copy of a fire report?
Insurance agents requesting a copy of a fire report for one of their insured, should send a stamped self addressed envelope to the station. Please enclose on your letterhead the date and location of the incident that you are requesting a report of along with the name of the party you have insured. Please also include your claim or other reference number in case there is future correspondence between us. We also request that you call the fire station at 608-647-4556 and leave a message of your request, with the details listed above. This will allow us time to have the report printed and ready when the envelope arrives.
Reports will not be emailed, nor will email requests for reports, or requests via the contact us link through this website be taken. The RCFD reserves the right to charge a reasonable copy fee for materials requested.
Why is there also an ambulance at the scene of a fire?
EMS plays an important role on fire scenes. The presence of an ambulance on a fire scene ensures that prompt and immediate care can be given to anyone on the fire scene requiring medical attention. This includes providing care for the property owners if necessary, care for an injured firefighter, and assisting with firefighter rehab and vitals monitoring.
Where can I receive my fire extinguishers serviced?
Look in the telephone book yellow pages under “Fire Extinguishers.”
