Aerial 709 is the second aerial truck in the department’s history. It was delivered to the RCFD in December of 2000. Manufactured by Pierce Manufacturing in Appleton, WI, and sold by Reliant Fire Apparatus, this unit replaced a 1975 Snorkel truck. The Aerials capabilities are far greater than the old Snorkel, ranging from greater reach from the truck in both height and length, higher load capacity, a larger pump, and a bigger cab for more firefighters to arrive on a scene. The old Snorkel was purchased by a local logger for private use. 709 is the only Aerial fire truck in Richland County. As listed below the inventory and capabilities of this unit are truly impressive. The old Snorkel was starting to become worn out and when talk or replacing it first came up the city fathers were alarmed by the price of a new unit. The City and members of the Fire Department looked for outside funding sources to apply towards the purchase of the new Aerial and wrote a grant with the State of Wisconsin, Department of Commerce. We were all happy to find our efforts had paid off and the city received a check in the amount of $300,000 towards the purchase of the new Aerial. The City through its regular budget process paid for the balance of the $635,000 unit. In our grant application we stated that this unit would be available on a regional basis to our mutual aid departments, and we were happy to help our friends on the Lone Rock Fire Department when its first call after delivery was to a church fire in their town. The investment in this apparatus also was influential in allowing the RCFD to improve its ISO rating to a Class 3. The members of our department are truly appreciate the assistance that was given to us to make this unit a reality, and it will serve us as well as the citizens of our community well for years to come. |
