Tanker 704 has gone through many changes through the years. The aluminum body with compartments, and steel tank were built new in 1982 by Marion Body Works in Marion, WI, for the Menominee Falls WI Fire Department and installed on a Mack cab-over chassis. As this department became more of a city department through growth their need for this tanker was eliminated. They kept the chassis for another apparatus project and we found out about the body and tank through our Marion sales representative from Johnson Fire Equipment. In 1990 the RCFD purchased the tank and body and a used chassis to install them on. The chassis, a 1986 GMC was formerly used as a route delivery truck. The tank and body were installed on this chassis, but due to the weight of the steel tank it never drove very well. In 1995 the RCFD purchased a new heavier chassis for this tank and body and it was switched over, thus solving the handling issues. The GMC chassis became Tanker 717 with the purchase of a lighter tank. Currently Tanker 704 is one of three tankers in our fleet and serves as first out tanker in our rural area. Stored in the body of this unit is a 3500 gallon folding tank that is set up at rural fires to allow the tankers to dump their water into so they can return to a fill point for another load of water. The size of this tank allows us to dump our largest tanker unit # 714 in its entirety. All of our tankers are equipped with a pump to also allow them to pump water off if need be. This unit will be in our fleet for many years to come. The future plans include reusing the chassis and body and replacing the steel tank with a lighter poly tank when it becomes a maintenance issue. |
