Firefighters were paged to an location in Ithaca Township on Highway 58 for the report of a natural gas leak. Upon arrival it was determined that a local contractor was digging holes in the yard of a residence for soil testing prior to septic work. The contractor had dug through a natural gas line owned by WE Energies in the yard of the home. 18 Firefighters responded with Engine 705, Squad 708, and Tanker 704, and were on scene for just over an hour. Houses in the immediate area were evacuated, and a service technician from the gas company clamped of the leak. Prior to leaving the scene firefighters walked through the neighboring houses with gas meters to make sure everything was safe. Highway 58 was closed to traffic for a short time. WE Energies made repairs to the gas line that afternoon. The Richland County Sheriffs Department assisted at the scene. No injuries were reported.
